Mendenhall Glacier – in Juneau. The glacier field is about 12 miles long.
About 80 years ago the glacier face was where the trees are behind us.
Massive waterfall just by the side of Mendenhall Glacier
Continuing the theme of advertising our blog, this time in glacial mud;
Glacier Bay National Park
They allow 2 cruise boats per day into Glacier Bay National Park. We were lucky enough for it to be our boat so spent the day cruising through the national park. Seriously cold but still couldn’t help spending most of the day on deck looking at the amazing views
Check out the icebergs which have calved off the glacier. Some pretty hefty debris in some places
Very cold;. 2 pairs of trousers and 7 layers on top and that’s just Jakki!
Grand Pacific Glacier – about 20 miles long. It looks black in these photos – as it retreats all the silt and rocks are left of the surface.
The face of this glacier is a mile wide;
The Margerie Glacier used to be dammed by the Grand Pacific glacier but is now able to flow as the GP has receded.
To give a bit of perspective the boat below is ringed in the photo above;
The ‘fresh’ ice looks blue;
Ice carving off the face as the glacier advances, Its a bit like whale pictures, you tend to capture the splash rather than the best bit;
Portage Glacier – about 6 miles long; 50 miles from Anchorage.
Yup, cold again!
Only 50 years ago the glacier filled what is now the lake.
Hubbard Glacier in Disenchantment Bay. About 75 miles long (and still advancing) the ice takes about 400 years to make it from the ice field to the face of the glacier. The face of the glacier is about 2 miles wide in this picture. So many icebergs you can’t get too close to this one
